What could be better than setting off down a trail that seemingly has no end? It is not so much the destination but rather the journey that intrigues the most. How fortunate to have parts of a beautifully worn trail that is at least 142 years old and still meandering across the countryside.
We are planning the first hike of the Telegraph trail for the new season on the first Sunday in May, 2008. All are welcome. Phone 1-(250)249-5783 for more information or e-mail info at the website.
Jan. 7 -- An inch or so of new snow. Took the motoski along the Telegraph wagon trail as far as Diamond road , then turned off for Donny’s cabin along the Fraser river.
Jan. 14 -- Ventured out on the snowmobile. Broke trail along the wagon road as far as Diamond road and then down to Donny’s. Saw a moose at Hidden Valley.
Feb. 18 -- Cloudy and -2C. this morning. Took a spin with the snowmobile. Cut several trees off the wagon trail.
Feb. 20 -- Clear sky and -12C. early this morning. Went all the way to Goose lake (10 miles) on the wagon trail with the Polaris. Snow is quite deep this year. Had to cut a few fallen trees out of the way.
April 21 -- Clear this morning, -5C.. Walked over the ridge on the T. trail and back along the wagon trail. Lots of snow still along the creek in the shade. Large flocks of geese going north all day.
April 23 -- 0C. and clear early this morning. Put up an information sign at the Telegraph trail- head. Cleared out some brush and windfalls along the beginning of the trail.
May 1 -- +1C. and cloudy early this morning. Cut a detour around a wash-out on the wagon trail. Whittier creek flooded higher than I can remember this year.
May 2 -- +3C., early. Leveled out the road bed in the canyon from the scree sliding down onto the old T. wagon trail.
May 14 -- Took the quad to work on the wagon trail. Walked home when the axle broke.
May 16 -- Lance came down after work and towed my quad up the hills with his quad to get it home.
May 31 -- Ventured up the wagon trail along the creek on the newly repaired quad. Cleared some dead beetle pine fall from the trail.
June 1 -- Did some shovel work repair on the Winger creek crossing of the wagon trail. Very hot out.
June 22 -- Took the quad on the wagon trail as far as Hidden Valley. Lots of detours on that section now since the flooding.
June 25 -- Trimmed the grass in the trail parking lot. Continued to clear the road embankment. The deer that feeds in the meadow has a tiny fawn.
June 29 -- Asked Donny along to help clear the T. trail as far as Diamond road. Lots of mosquitoes.
July 5 -- I cleared north from Diamond road for a couple of hours on the T. trail. Saw a bear on the way out. Sunny with a nice breeze. Hardly any mosquitoes in the forest. Very pleasant with all the wild flowers in bloom along the way.
July 6 -- Journeyed out to Herkyelthtie (Goose) lake to tackle the well-preserved section of T. trail going south from there.
July 7 -- Used one tank of gas with the brush-cutter in the meadow at Whittier creek crossing. Reports of cougar sightings in the area.
July 8 -- Cut more brush and grass in the meadow. Also, finished cutting out the blow-down on the T. trail between Goose lake and Whittier creek, about ten miles.
July 31 -- Conducted a member of the Prince George Caledonia Ramblers along the T. trail from Herkyelthtie lake to Rawlings road.
Aug. 1 -- Purchased a new chain and some files for my saw. Took the quad up to cut a couple of large wind-falls from the trail. Still warm, 25Centigrade.
Sept. 3 -- Donny and I cleared the T. trail between McKenzie trail and Blackwater river, a beautiful section of trail. The beetle killed pine are starting to fall now. Saw one bear.
Sept. 9 -- Clear weather. Frost on the windshield this morning. Drove out to Pantage creek and cleared down to the Blackwater river on the T. trail, another beautiful section. Met the nice young couple from Wyoming who have bought the Bailey ranch at Pantage creek crossing.
Sept. 21 -- Picked up one hundred or so trail markers with the Telegraph trail logo, $150.
Oct. 5 -- Received a nice letter from the Tourism Ministry thanking us for our effort on the T. trail.
Nov. 5 -- Snow is soft and wet. Took the motoski along the wagon trail a ways, cutting out the bent over saplings.
Nov. 25 -- Ventured up the Telegraph wagon trail on the motoski to clear the recent windfalls. Got as far as Hidden Valley. One large spruce, in particular, has snapped off in the high wind and had blocked the way. Good to be out in the snow again.
Dec. 5 -- The day dawned clear and cold, -17C.. Went for a walk in the powdery snow after the sun came up. Went as far as the third creek crossing on the wagon trail. Cleared several small trees that the snow had brought down. Startled a grouse that burst out from under the snow where it had taken refuge from the cold. Noticed lots of rabbit tracks this year.
Dec. 26 -- Four or five inches of new snow. Went through a Christmas card of cotton-covered trees while breaking trail up to Marshall road. Had coffee with the nice couple at Bone Meadow ranch.
Happy trails everyone!
