Foreword |
Much more work remains to be done on the trail as of June, 1997. Besides the yearly windfall cutting, some sections need to be located and cleared farther north. An association, dedicated to the preservation and upkeep of the trail has been formed. In 1990, the Telegraph Trail Preservation Society came into being. Present officers are: President, Dwight Dodge; Secretary, Betty Motherwell; Treasurer, Lorelee Sutton; Directors, Ann Stackhouse and Mark Lauckner.
The long-term vision is to eventually have the entire Telegraph Trail restored from Quesnel to Atlin near the Yukon border. It could be patterned after the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Coast Trail in the United States.
Every year, since 1980, a few dedicated souls have gone on an all-day hike along the Telegraph Trail. Each year they hike a different section, usually in May and August. This is a tradition that I hope can continue.
